Ahmed Deedat: A Life Dedicated to Islam

Ahmed DeedatAhmed Deedat was born in Surat, India in 1918 to Muslim parents. His father worked in agriculture in India, but later changed his career. Nine-year-old Deedat left India and immigrated to Kwazulu-Natal with his family, a province located on South Africa’s eastern coast where his father began work as a tailor. His mother passed away a few months after they left India, and yet despite these circumstances, Deedat was able to overcome the language barrier and excel at his studies at an early age. He was brought up a Sunni Muslim and studied at the Islamic Center in Durban till sixth grade where his performance was stellar. Yet, seven years after landing on South African territory, Deedat was forced to leave school and began working to contribute to his family’s financial needs. At the ripe age of 16, he began work in retail eventually working in a furniture factory and spent twelve years of his life climbing the career ladder from driver, to salesperson, to factory manager

While working, he came across many Christian missionaries eager to convert him to their religion. In his first encounters with these missionaries Deedat was not fully-capable of answering their questions about Islam nor counter their religious claims. Religious ideology in South Africa has long been used as an effort to pacify the masses, especially Calvinist Christian ideology, and although those who spread ‘the word’ were well-intentioned; Blacks, Colored, and Indian South Africans who accepted Christianity more willingly viewed themselves as ‘subordinate’ to their white brothers in faith. This, coupled with continuous interaction with missionaries, sparked Deedat’s interest in comparative religions and encouraged him to read more about Islam and Christianity… Click here to Read more about Ahmed Deedat

Biblioislam.net Managers speaks on launching of the English site

Biblioislam.net: A Gateway to Academic Research

On Wednesday, January 7, 2009, Biblioislam.net launched its English website, thereby laying a new foundation stone in the construction of this vast project, which will soon be launched in six other languages

en-logoBiblioislam.net is a project owned by Al-Balagh Cultural Society in Qatar, and is also one of the projects administrated by Media International, in addition to its many other ventures, which include; Islamonline.net and Readingislam.com

Biblioislam.net is the first, as well as largest, academic website to be launched in both Arabic and English that provides comprehensive informative, academic, intellectual, and interactive services. These services are available for students, researchers, intellects, and thinkers in fields that serve the paradigm of “values and identity” of the contemporary Muslim world

Biblioislam.net: A Library for Every Researcher

Dr. Hani Atiyyah, Prof. of Library and Information Science, as well as the initiator and executor of Biblioislam.net, says that the project initiated within IslamOnline.net under the name of “E-Library” in November 2001

Al-Riwaq Website

The “E-Library” was created with the purpose of fulfilling the urgent need of Arabic-speaking researchers in obtaining sources of information in the form of bibliographic data. In July 2003, its service developed through the same website and was given a new name, “Al-Riwaq”. At this stage, abstracts, as well as the selective dissemination of information (SDI) service and News Letter, were added and made available to registered researchers on the website

Also, the needs of English-speaking researchers were fulfilled through the development of a bibliographic database under the name of “IMAM,” which is the abbreviation of: Islam, Muslims, Arabs, and Middle East

In 2003, the project was planned and registered as an independent website under the name “Biblioislam.net” and booked the domains; .net, .org, .com, .info on the internet

In May 2006, the Arabic website of Biblioislam.net was launched, adding new sections, including, abstracts, reviews, full text, prizes and awards, site directory, and upcoming conferences.
Biblioislam.net’s English and Arabic websites include the same sections and services, but with different content. The content of the English website includes intellectual writings written by Western scholars. Currently, in addition to its Arabic and English websites, Biblioislam.net is working on the release of other multilingual versions of the website in French, German, Turkish, Malawi, Persian and Urdu

Biblioislam.net: Towards Society Built on Knowledge

د. هانئ عطية

Prof. Hani Atiyyah

Regarding the mission of Biblioislam.net, Prof. Atiyyah says that the project originally aimed at preserving the heritage of the Muslim World “Ummah”, covering its vast areas in different languages. This is achieved through utilizing the latest information technology techniques and overcoming the barriers of time, geography and language

Biblioislam.net Home Page

The reason for choosing the name “Biblioislam.net” for the website is that the first part of the term, which is “biblio” broadly means library, a list of books, love for reading, and knowledge. While the broad meaning of the second part, “Islam”, is that the intellectual writings are by, on, and about the Muslim Ummah. Thus, in order to accomplish this mission, the project defined its subject matter and time limits, confining it to the scholarly writings published throughout the twentieth century onwards, concentrating on providing researchers with corroborated academic material

دكتور هانئ عطية في إحدى اللقاءات بقطر

Prof. Hany speaks about biblioislam.net in Morocco

The vision of the project is to integrate with other projects related to the academic field. This is with the purpose of attaining benefit from such projects and not imitating them; in the pursuit of forming an academic community that interacts through the internet, to serve in the future as an independent institutional research entity, gaining its reliability and credibility through its interactive services and authentic content

In this respect, the project works on training cadres concerned with academic work through the internet, at the same time spreading “cyber-culture” amongst academia by the transition from paper to digital medium. More importantly, Biblioislam.net is intent on spreading the ethics of the academic community in Islamic spheres by adhering to the morals and regulations of research work in the virtual environment, and developing the industry of E-content publishing through different mediums

Biblioislam.net: A Treasure Trove of the Ummah’s Memory

د. عماد سين

Dr. Emad Hussein

Concerning this virtual community, Dr. Emad Hussein the project manager of public relations says that the website with its various languages, sections and services forms the largest infrastructure for about 70 international organizations, universities, research institutions and academic publishers, presenting their works through one website

Biblioislam.net, and IslamOnline.net combined, act as the largest network of 469 cooperating correspondents, writers, counselors, and researchers throughout most of the Arab and Muslim world

The website provides more than 250,000 searchable materials of bibliographic data in both Arabic and English. This bibliographic data include approximately 90,000 university theses that cover 516 universities, about 80,000 scholarly books that cover 5,653 publishers, about 60,000 articles published by 2,089 academic periodicals and journals, and about 20,000 researches published by 1,139 national and international conferences, symposiums, forums, and seminars

The website also allows browsing more than 20,000 abstracts and about 5,000 full-texts. At present, over 36,000 registered researchers on the website, from 164 countries, benefit from this massive collection

Biblioislam.net and Intellectual Property Copyright

Dr. Hussein adds that Biblioislam.net supports intellectual property copyright protection. Those in charge of the project are actively concerned with the protection of intellectual property copyrights. All the institutions that Biblioislam.net currently collaborates with offer their material, free of charge, to be published on the website. This is attained through official agreements with the research centers, institutions, and the researchers themselves

The technical construction of the website offers various options for its viewers, as it provides the user with viewing, printing, or downloading options, depending on the agreement between the research entity and Biblioislam.net. Some publishers have given their publications to be published on Biblioislam.net, while other institutions have agreed to provide their academic publications according to different regulations

Biblioisalm.net controls copyright regulations through the technical facilities of its database which was especially designed for Biblioislam.net. Although maintaining such services and high technical options is costly, Biblioisalm.net currently provides its services for researchers free of charge

The project also sets legal agreements that protect individual researchers’ financial and intellectual copyrights. This is applied whenever a researcher wishes to publish a thesis. This helps to enhance communication between generations by re-publishing the works that are out of print, specifically publishing the complete works of well-known intellects, after reaching an agreement with their inheritors

Biblioislam.net—Future Horizons

Lamya Hamad, the Editor-in-Chief of Biblioislam.net’s English website, describes the content of the project and its editorial material as being enormous, as it has now reached about 110,000 pages. She adds that an important section of this website is “Studies,” which provides studies, scholarly researches in all the fields of social and human sciences. This is presented through important theme pages, such as “Concepts and Terms,” and “Contemporary Studies”. In addition, the “Reviews” section provides critical analysis of scholarly journals, theses, and specialized documents and reports

Concerning the future horizons of the editorial aspect of the website, Lamya Hamad adds that by 2009 the editorial content will become dominant through Biblioislam.net’s “Bibliopedia”, which is regarded as one of the most important strategic projects of the website

Bibliopedia is an encyclopedia that will include profiles of scholars, events, organizations and institutions, cities and regions, movements and reforms, systems and constitutions, projects and publications, flags and symbols, stamps and currencies, languages and dialects, and races and ethnic groups. The content will also develop by adding special folders, which aim at presenting contemporary Islamic issues to the academic audience through endeavors, such as; “Muhammad … Life and Message” and “Palestine … The People and the Land”

Regarding the version that will be launched in other languages, Dr. Emad Hussein adds that the purpose of the project is to collaborate with different academic institutions, allowing academic researches to be viewed in their original languages. In fact, an agreement of collaboration has been concluded between Biblioislam.net and the Center d’études et de Recherches Humanitaires et Socials, Oujda, Morocco. This agreement entails that the center should be in charge of directing the services of Biblioislam.net’s French website. The project also aims at collaborating with institutions in Turkey, Malaysia and India, in order to achieve its mission for the benefit of researchers all over the world
